Locations of Gas Plants and Other Coal-tar Sites in the U.S.

THE STATE OF NEVADA

Introduction

1874 brought discovery of coal at the Pancake mines and at El Dorado Canyon, both in Lyons County. The coal was found acceptable for generating boiler steam for the Comstock Lode mines at Virginia City and a rail line was being put into make that service. This discovery only bolstered the three existing gas plants in the State (two at Virginia City and one at Carson City). Eventually the number of gas plants (including the acetylene plant at Lovelock (pre 1904) numbered at least 13.
